The society was formed in 1940 to promote the science and practise of horticulture and the interests of gardeners in the then Borough of Finchley. Today the society has a membership of around 180 covering all age groups from young single people to spry octogenarians. TRADING HUTS There are two of them run by the Society to further their aims by selling composts, fertilisers, garden chemicals and sundries at competitive prices. The main Trading hut at Gordon Road Allotments is open Sundays from 10am to 12 noon, mid March to mid October. The other trading hut at the rear of 23-25 Nethercourt Avenue is open the First Wednesday of each month; 7.30 to 8.30 pm/dusk, April to September. THE ANNUAL PLANT SALE Held in May, provides the gardeners of Finchley with a wide variety of annuals, perennials and vegetables. Plants and surplus produce are sold at the Gordon Road Trading Hut, according to availability. ALLOTMENTS Gordon Road and Nethercourt Avenue are administered by the Society on behalf of the Borough of Barnet. A proportion of the allotments are held by women and many are worked by families with children. Rent and water rates are very reasonable; senior citizens pay a reduced rate. LECTURES AND SOCIAL MEETINGS These are held periodically throughout the year, the details of which are published in the Newsletter, with a visit to a garden in June or July and a social in December.  A barbeque and other social events are held at Gordon Road. MEMBERSHIP FEES: £5.00 per year or £2.50 for those aged 60+ or the unemployed. newsletters are sent out four or five times a year to keep members informed of the Society's activities. Site Facilities: Trading Hut, Toilet, Community Area, Water and electricity supply. Allotment membership - 70.
